Do you speak English or Spanish? 2/19/06

WARNING: You know when your kids (or little brother's) do or say something that you think is just so cute and funny.....and then everyone else you tell is like "uh, yeah, that's real cute"........not thinking it's half as funny as you did? Well, today this blog is full of that. And unfortunately, I can't help but blog about it. (Sorry, it is my blog) But you know what the great part is? I can't see you roll your eyes, or hear you say that your kids are so much cuter...... so roll away!

As weekends go.....this was a pretty darn good one. It was full of unstructured fun and relaxation. Saturday, we stopped by my parents house to hang out for a bit. My Mom, Brooke, Bryce and I spent a good hour jumping on the trampoline doing flips and seeing just how high we could bounce each other (well, Bryce was really just running head-first, full speed, into the net around the trampoline.....intent on finding out just how far it will stretch, and how fast it could send him hurtling backwards).

After the jumping marathon.....I remembered I needed to run to the grocery store. I think all the bouncing must have knocked something loose in my brain, because I thought it would be really fun to let my 15 yr. old brother, Aaron, drive me to the store. He has his permit, so I knew it was perfectly legal....
but after getting in the car with him, I was seriously questioning how safe it was. Andrewdecided it should be a pretty entertaining trip, with Aaron driving and all, so he tagged along. Aaron was nervous enough (having only driven twice before) without Andrew giving him "pointers" from the back seat ......."So, Aaron, you know if you take the corners at 20 miles an hour, the car is much easier to handle"......"You can go faster, the cops won't pull you over until you're going at least 25 miles over the speed limit"........."When you pull into the parking space make sure you tap the car in front of you, that way you know you're parked good". Thank goodness Aaron is a really smart guy, and just laughed right along with Andrew.

Aaron did pretty good, and we arrived to the store without any major traffic violations. I only had to slam on the imaginary break (you know the one.....it's the one your dad would always stomp on while trying to give calm and constructive guidance as you made a left into on-coming traffic) just a few times, and I only swore out loud twice. At the store, Andrew thought we could use a bit more entertainment. He knows of my slight obsession with all things British, so he started speaking with a British accent. A pretty good English accent, actually. It was really hillarious, walking through the store with him trying to call things their proper "British" name.......until Aaron says "Your being dumb, do you even know English?" We all stopped and laughed, as the stupid irony got to us. Then Andrew called Aaron a "bloody wanker", in which Aaron responds with, "Isn't wanker 'English-speak' for prostitute?" Andrew says "No.....that's wench." Aaron says "Oh, well, then what is a 'wanker'?" Andrew shrugs, and they both look at me. I say "You guys can't figure out what 'wanker' means, seriously?" Them, "No, just tell us." So I did.....and they both giggled like little school girls.......and then 'wanker' was all I heard, for the duration of the shopping trip. (They love having a new word to call each other, and Alex.......that my mom hasn't yet banned from saying in the house.)

That night, my in-law's (Lou and Sue) took Rob and me out to dinner for Rob's belated birthday present. We always love going out with them. Louis is a gourmet chef, and always knows where to go and what to order......so it always makes for a great dining experience. And Louis is often more entertaining and hillarious than he knows. Especially when he and Robbie order the "rattlesnake bites" as an appetizer.....expecting real rattlesnake - which is actually served at some restaurants around here - and they get jalapeno poppers, because neither of them bothered to read the description under the name!

On Sunday we drove out to spend the day at Lou and Sue's.......cause they haven't seen the kids since Brooke's birthday.....and the kid's needed some "Bampoo" and "MorMor" time. It was a nice, relaxing day. And, as an added bonus, Lou fixed me some grilled lobster for lunch- delicious!

Then yesterday, we decided it would be a fun family night to take the kids out for dinner and then to the "play place" at the mall. We decided to go to a Mexican restaurant. When our food arrived, Brooke was a bit disgruntled. See, she and Bryce always split a meal when we go out, and they forgot to bring an extra plate.......so, after the food was set down (Bryce got their plate placed in front of him), Brooke thought they had forgotten hers. She turns toward the kitchen entrance and yells , "Hey!" followed by some kind of inflectioned yibberish. Not quite sure what was going on - she passed the whole baby talk stage almost 2 years ago - I said "What are you saying Brooke?" She looked at me like I was a little crazy and said "Mom, I watch Dora, I knowSpanish." Apparently, she was telling them, in "Spanish", that she wanted her food, please. What was I thinking......

Hope you had a great weekend, too!
