This morning I went to open our back door, and something in the corner caught my eye........a lizard......on the inside of the door frame. Oh crap! (but I didn't say 'crap') Like I said, I am OK with lizards....if they are outside. I really don't like the idea of it burrowing down into my comfy bed or somewhere like that in my house. So, I dash into the kitchen and grap a plastic cup. I try to trap the lizard between the wall and the cup, but it skuttles out.....right toward me. I drop the cup and scream (as per the previous little girl scream). Brooke starts crying because she is sitting in the family room, and can just see her mother running around screaming like a mad woman. I then run to get the broom. Eventually, I manipulate the lizard out the back door......giving him a good flick onto the patio. I slam the back door and lock it. Whew! I felt quite accomplished.....beside the fact that the lizard was still laying comletely still where it landed, and I felt bad that it was most likely dead.
With that being done, and peace being restored, I decided I could safely use the bathroom. But while I was in there, Brooke and Bryce had other plans. They had seen me flick the lizard outside and lock the door......so of course they were curious. They decided to go outside. Now, seeing as I was detained at the time, I cannot be certain of the events that happened before I got back......but this is what the evidence and the 3 year old's statement point to.....
Brooke and Bryce decided to go out back an investigate the "dead" lizzard. After closer inspection....the lizard was not dead at all. Brooke screamed when she saw it wiggle, and Bryce - being the "manly man" that he is - ran inside and grabbed the closest thing (the phone that was lying on the kitchen table) and returned to smash the lizard. Afterall, he is the man of the house during the day....and he was just following his male instinct to protect his women. When I returned, they were standing outside on the patio and I notic
e the missing lizard. I asked, "Where is the lizard?" Brooke said "Uh, it's under the phone." Me, "WHAT?!?"......just then noticing the phone that was lying on the edge of the concrete. Brooke said, "Brycie got it with the phone". Seriously? Cause lizards can move pretty fast. So I say (while still standing inside the door) "Brycie, pick up the phone for Mommy".......as he does, we all lean forward with horrific suspense. Sure enough there is, not the whole lizard, just a still-wiggling lizard tail. Bryce holds the phone triumphant in the air and squeals "Yay!!!" Such a boy! When we all got back inside Brooke sits down and says, "That was the ugliest cricket I have ever seen!".
It's hard to see the lizard's tail in the picture of Bryce and his battle-phone, but it is about a foot
below the scooter......here's a better one for you. It seems Bryce only smashed the lizard's tail......the rest of it got away. The tail is bent in the middle....but was still wiggling away at the time of this picture. Don't feel too badly for the lizard....if you've grown up anywhere near the desert.....then you probably at some point in your childhood played "pull the tail off the lizard and watch it wiggle" game. Not a very humane game, I will admit..... but it does give you the knowledge that lizards can happily live without tails, and grow them back. So, I guess no harm, no foul??Bryce is my hero today......he really will do just about anything for his girls (and also, for the simple pleasure of smooshing stuff). Brooke and I are so happy to have a strong little man here with us, while Daddy and Braden are out taking on the world.
