Dancing Dreams..... 3/03/06

A lifelong dream of mine came to fruition this week........Brooke started dance class. It was truly one of the highlights of my life. I know, you're probably thinking "How lame is this chick?" I guess pretty lame, because for as long as I can remember I have dreamed about having a little girl and taking her to dance class.

I started dance lessons when I was just 2 years old. My first dance teacher was Miss Viva. She was an ex-Rockette who had moved to Las Vegas for a slower paced life, and to teach dance. I performed in my first recital when I was 2 1/2 yrs. old. From the moment I stepped onto that stage, I was hooked. I am not a good public speaker, can't act to save my life, and singing just ain't my thing (as anyone who's heard me karaoke can attest, too!) But I could dance....and I loved doing it! It was my "thing" and creative release for most of my life.....it also helped open up many doors and opportunities for me.

I remember in 3rd grade, we had to write an essay about ourselves and include 3 goals we hoped to acheive in the future. Mine were (1) Get married (2) Have children (3) Be 5'7" tall. My teacher was curious as to why that last one was on my list of goals, and asked me about it. I remember looking at her like she was crazy, and saying "Because you can't be a Vegas showgirl if you aren't at least 5'7"!" Duh, everyone knows that!?

This is a picture of me and Miss Viva, back in 1978, after my first dance recital. I danced for 17 years after that, and only stopped because I decided that keeping my full-time job and paying my rent was a more responsible choice, than continuing with dance.

What makes this dream even better...... is that Brooke is really excited about dancing, as well. In fact, first thing this morning she had me put on her "tappies" so she could practice her "shuffle, shuffle, shuffle's". If she didn't want to go to class or participate....I will admit that my heart would be a bit broken.....but we would just find her something else to channel all that energy into. If she ever tells me that she's done, that'll be just fine. I've already locked away the precious memory of taking my excited little 3 year old to her first dance class. And I will never forget how Brooke looked while they were doing "bar work" that first day. She is definately the smallest girl in her class and she can barely reach the bar, but she didn't stop smiling the whole time. During class, she looked up and saw me watching from the parents window......she gave me the biggest smile, waved like a maniac, and then gave me the "thumbs up"! How could this not be one of the highlights of my life?! (yeah, you don't have to say it....I know I'm still lame!)
